Coming out of Carman-Ainsworth High School, wiry guard Kieon Arkwright believed he was a Division I player.
Unfortunately for him, he didn't receive an interest, instead taking a scholarship to Division II Saginaw Valley State. It was quickly clear to him that the school wasn't a fit — he was buried on the bench and the offense didn't fit his ability to create his own shot from the perimeter as well as get to the line.
Arkwright left school and enrolled at St. Clair Community College to rebuild his confidence and get a situation that was more to his liking.
Not only did he have a good season statistically, averaging nearly 20 points and 6 assist per game, but he led the surprising Skippers out of a loaded region that featured three other teams that had been ranked in the top five nationally and into the national tournament.
"It was a lot of exposure (at the national tournament), playing in front of a lot of people," Arkwright said. "The whole experience was just real good. There are good coaches over here (at St. Clair) and good players that I played with."
Still, though, Arkwright found little Division I interest. He eventually committed to Division II Gannon University, but reconsidered after a few days.
"In my heart, I just believed I was a Division I player," he said.
His patience paid off as Texas Pan-American had him in for a workout and the coaches were impressed enough to offer a scholarship.
"I just can't believe this has finally happened," he said. "Everyone told me these last two years that I wasn't D-I, and I'm just going to do everything I can to prove them wrong."
